Homestake Mining Company McLaughlin Gold Mine Collection

Abstract

This collection includes materials generated by and for the Homestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Gold Mine, mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, and acquired by the Donald and Sylvia McLaughlin Natural Reserve as mining operations wound down. The collection takes the form of three series.

The Mining Operations series includes 18 binders of operating manuals for the McLaughlin Gold Mine from 1984, covering policies and procedures, with specific reference to safety, maintenance, and equipment

The Site Reports series includes reports created or commissioned by Homestake Mining Company. It includes 16 volumes of archeological surveys conducted by David A. Frederickson, Mary Praetzellis, and Adrian Praetzellis of the Sonoma State Anthropological Study Center, 21 volumes of environmental reports and statements (EIRs/EISs), and at least 43 volumes of environmental monitoring manuals and reports, including data on water quality, air quality, wildlife, geology, aquatic ecology, vegetation, cultural resources, and socioeconomics.

The Data series contains bound sets of raw data covering meteorology, environmental quality, wildlife sightings by mine employees, and an index of core samples stored in a large warehouse on site. Hugh D. Safford (UC Davis) created an overview of this data collection in 2000, and much of it is available in digital form.
