Kenneth Norris NRS Collection

Abstract

This collection consists of Kenneth S. Norris's files from his involvement with the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve (LHBC), Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (SGM), Santa Cruz Island Reserve (SCI), and Año Nuevo Island Reserve (ANI), particularly his committee memberships and his relationships with people involved with the reserves. Norris was a UC Santa Cruz professor and founding figure of the NRS.

The contents of this collection include: (1) files concerning SGM including correspondence among Norris, Phillipe Cohen, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Gerald Hillier (BLM district manager), the UC Office of the President, and other SGM staff from 1977-85, (2) a file on SCI that includes correspondence with The Nature Conservancy and reports from 1976-85, (3) files on Eagle Lake Field Station and Norris’ efforts to bring this site into the NRS, (4) files on ANI and LHBC, including correspondence, brochures, and reports on the status of reserves, including documentation of how TNC and Save-the-Redwoods League purchased the Big Creek property from Fred Farr, Edward Landels, and other landholders, and the Packard purchase of adjacent lands, and (5) some of Norris' personal items such as travel receipts.
