Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve Digital Archive

Abstract

This collection contains administrative records, data, and documents pertaining to the Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve's two sites—the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL) and Valentine Camp—which are run as a single unit affiliated with UC Santa Barbara. This collection has been digitized and is stored on site.

This collection includes: (1) annual reports, from 1974-78, and use statistics, from 1987-88, (2) materials pertaining to researchers and K-12 education including the Outdoor Science Education Program from 1975-2003, (3) a bibliography for SNARL and Valentine Camp, (4) materials pertaining to facilities, from 1998-2005, (5) materials pertaining to the Owens Valley Fish Slough, including maps and a report by Wayne Ferren from 1991, (6) information on the Sierra Star water conservation program from 2008, (7) materials pertaining to the Haddad property, briefly acquired by the UC then transferred to the California Department of Fish and Game (now Fish and Wildlife), near Valentine Camp, including aerial photos, property assessment reports, and deeds, (8) materials on the White Mountain Research Station from 1996-2007, (9) NRS files including assessments of various reserves, policy documents, annual reports, and correspondence, from 1973-2003, (10) materials pertaining to the assessment of Wawona field station for inclusion in the NRS, from 2007-08, (11) photographs of SNARL and Valentine Camp, including the facility construction, NRS meetings, educational programs, aerial photos, and photos from the reserve’s 25th anniversary in 2008, (12) historic SNARL documents including agreements with Cal Fish and Game and the US Forest Service, assorted data from Convict Creek, information on a SNARL seminar series from 1986-90, information on animal care, and management plans including completed questionnaires sent to researchers seeking feedback on how they use and view the reserve, from 1941-2008, (13) Valentine Camp documents, including notes on flora and fauna, information on property acquisitions, Cal Fish and Game permits, information on forest management programs, and quarterly reports, from 1988-2008, (14) materials pertaining to the Mammoth Community Water District, (15) files on a project investigating the Mammoth Community Water District’s role in local water rights, from 2000, (16) historic reserve documents, including a guest list for the 1973 reserve dedication, early correspondence with UCSB and the NRS, planning documents from the early days of the reserve, and information on advisory committee meetings.
