Boyd Deep Canyon Reserve Director's Collection

Abstract

This collection contains materials collected by the Boyd Deep Canyon (BDC) Reserve’s directors. It covers topics from the institutional history of BDC, to BDC's relationships with neighboring landowners, governmental, and nongovernmental agencies, to the natural and environmental history of Deep Canyon itself. Of particular note are files on the conservation efforts of reserve faculty and staff in the surrounding region. ‘

The collection contains four broad series:

The Administration and Operations series includes: (1) legal and property related documents, (2) agreements with federal agencies covering land use and possible land acquisitions from the 1960s-80s, (3) correspondence with the US Congress pertaining to Al Muth's testimony in 2000, (4) planning documents including the 1970s-era Lewis Report and a 1981 reserve evaluation report, (5) a clipping file on Philip Boyd containing some of his handwritten letters, (6) 0roject files, and (7) other operations and management documents.

The NRS Management series includes correspondence and subject files on fundraising and reserve management, as well as relationships and projects with other reserves and organizations. Of particular note are files on Desert Bill S 21. The series also includes reserve surveys and reports from 1986, professional development materials from 1992-93, and documents pertaining to the cultural and institutional history of the NRS.

The Research and Reports series includes: (1) information, correspondence, and data related to research conducted at BDC in the fields of archaeology, biology, entomology, and botany, (2) files related to the Anthony H. Galt's archaeological survey of the site, including field notes and data, (3) bibliographies of research conducted at the reserve from 1978-79 and 1986-89), (4) files pertaining to research collections including the reserve library and herbarium, (5) information on researchers and statistics on reserve use, and (6) copies of annual reports and data related to them.

The Conservation Projects series includes documents pertaining to: (1) habitat conservation programs & endangered species issues, (2) habitat conservation areas for particular endangered species, including bighorn sheep, desert salamander, and the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard (BDC affiliated faculty and staff played key roles in the lizard’s pioneering habitat conservation plan, and the series includes materials related to these efforts), and (3) BDC's involvement in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Program.

Notes

As of 2012, an additional drawer of materials concerning the fringe-toed lizard was in the reserve director's office filing area, northwest corner, left hand filing cabinet, drawer 3. It should be considered part of the Conservation Projects series detailed above.
