Sagehen Creek Field Station Miscellaneous Historical Items Collection

Abstract

This collection consists of miscellaneous historical materials of various provenance related to research and teaching at the Sagehen Creek Field Station. It includes files on: (1) Luna Leopold's records pertaining to Sagehen and the Frances Simes Hastings Natural History Reservation from 1962-70, originally held by the US Geological Survey, (2) plans for the reserve’s fish observation tank, (3) mammal tag logs from the 1970s, most likely created by Vernon Hawthorne and others, (4) subject files and correspondence on Sagehen from the chairs of the erstwhile UC Berkeley Department of Forestry and Resource Management, including Dennis E. Teeguarden, Joe McBride, and John A. Helms, on topics such as cooperative use agreements with the US Forest Service and other UC Berkeley business, (5) annual reports and management plans, (6) landscape architecture Master's thesis by Martha Lee Berner on planning and site design for Sagehen, which includes a brief history of the site, (7) logbooks on specimen collections from 1986, (8) Vernon Hawthorne's log books from 1968-79, including information on activities, classes, and visitors to Sagehen, (9) Vernon Hawthorne's field notes from 1965-71 on species sightings, bird bandings, and related topics, (10) other assorted field notes from Sagehen, (11) student research records from classes taught at Sagehen by Paul R. Needham, (12) children's thank you notes from 2002 addressed to station managers Jeff Brown and Faerthen Felix, (13) assorted Sagehen research and publications, including progress reports, clippings, and annual reports.
