UC San Diego NRS Administration Collection

Abstract

This collection consists of administrative records for the UCSD reserves. Most files were created by UC San Diego NRS academic coordinator Isabelle Kay. This collection is notable for its extensive files on restoration projects, community relations, and the role of the UCSD NRS office in preserving green space in the San Diego area.

This collection includes six series:

The first series covers documents pertaining to the Dawson Los Monos Canyon Reserve and the neighboring city of Carlsbad. Contents include: (1) administrative documents including permits, waivers, facilities documents, and public outreach files, (2) research documents including undergraduate research, (3) conservation and management documents including habitat conservation plans, multiple species conservation plans, fire suppression plans, and weed removal plans, (4) files concerning neighbor relations, land management, and development in Carlsbad, mostly from the 1990s, including the Green Oaks Ranch, Oceanside, Vista Industrial Park, Box Canyon, and Carlsbad Raceway sites, (5) Dawson biological and archaeological surveys from 1975-81, (6) newspaper clippings, timelines of events, species lists, and maps, and (7) files on migrant worker camps and squatters at Dawson from the 1980s. Documents in this series date from 1970 to 2011.

The second series covers the Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve. Contents include: (1) administrative and research documents, (2) land management and restoration files on topics such as alkali weed removal and light footed clapper rail recovery from 1985-2007, (3) neighbor relations files, especially on developments and condominium complexes that could affect the marsh, and (4) files pertaining to the local Wetlands Advisory Board, from 1990-97. Documents in this series date from 1978 to 2010.

The third series covers the Scripps Coastal Reserve. Contents include: (1) administrative and research documents, (2) files on trespassing and illegal plant collecting, (3) neighbor relations files concerning the Scripps Estates Associates, individual private landholders, Torrey Pines State Reserve, and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, (4) files related to the Marine Sciences Physical Planning Committee, from 1990-2001, (5) files on the reserve’s docent program, including data on human beach use, bird sightings, and intertidal areas, from 2007-12). Documents in this series date from 1974 to 2012.

The fourth series covers General NRS Administrative Documents for the UCSD campus office, including annual reports, general information files on other NRS reserves, equipment files, forms, fundraising, and budget and financial documents from 1965-2010.

The fifth series consists of Reference Files, mostly on species management and other ecological restoration issues. The series does not pertain directly to the NRS but does include research conducted on the reserves (1990-2008).

The sixth series covers the Elliott Chaparral Reserve. Contents include: (1) administrative and research documents, (2) land management files, especially on eucalyptus removal and prescribed burns, (3) neighbor relations files concerning the Alliant International University (formerly United States International University) sports facility, Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar, San Diego Regional Airport, and Scripps Ranch Estates.
