Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve

Information

Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve (CSM) is located on the south coast of Santa Barbara County. It is is owned by the UC, and it is administered by UC Santa Barbara. CSM was identified as a potential NRS site in 1966, and it was established as a reserve in 1977. CSM is an important coastal wetland habitat for migratory birds, since it is one of the few remaining in urban Southern California. CSM works with the Land Trust of Santa Barbara, the City of Carpinteria, and local landowners to protect and promote the site, which has become one of the world’s most-studied coastal wetland ecosystems.
