Stunt Ranch Collection

Abstract

This collection consists of historical materials pertaining to Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve. It includes three series:

The Pre-Natural Reserve System Materials series includes: (1) materials from or about the donor Ethel Stunt (d. 1971), including correspondence, photographs, ephemera, artifacts, and a scrapbook, (2) legal documents, including deeds and a copy of a US Land Office survey from 1895, (3) three oral histories on tape cassette from area residents, (4) photographs of the ranch, including some dating to the early 1900s, (4) a scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the late nineteenth century, (5) aerial photos from the 1960s, (6) maps and posters, including some from surveys in the 1960s, and (7) other assorted scrapbooks, ephemera, and memorabilia.

The Natural Reserve System Materials series includes: (1) materials related to the 1993 fire, including the involvement of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the transfer of the property to UC Los Angeles shortly after the incident, (2) documents and clippings related to Stunt Ranch educational activities, public relations, public service, outreach, and fundraising, (3) research applications, (4) files related to other local groups, scientific institutions, and conservation organizations, and (5) materials related to the NRS and other reserves.

The Miscellaneous Materials series includes: (1) four binders of photographs and maps from the 1990s and 2000s, documenting projects of The Santa Monica Conservancy and Mountain Recreation Conservation Authority, (2) three binders of correspondence from the 1980s-90s, (3) one binder related to the site’s history and planning for oral histories, and (4) one binder of slide photographs of Stunt Ranch from the 1990s.
