Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

Information

Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve (LHBC) is located south of Monterey, off Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast. This reserve's history is closely intertwined with Big Sur's powerful landowners, and the government and non-governmental agencies operating in the area. LHBC was established in 1977 with the help of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Save-The-Redwoods League, and local landowners. A marine extension called the Big Creek Marine Research Reserve was added c.1993, with the assistance of the California Coastal Commission. The reserve’s collections provide insights into the relationships between field science, conservation, the state, and local land use politics.
