Frances Simes Hastings Natural History Reservation

Information

The Frances Simes Hastings Natural History Reservation (HNH) is located in Monterey County, southeast of Carmel Valley, on a former homestead ranch site. Founded in 1939 by Joseph Grinnell, it is the oldest UC reserve. It also has some of the most extensive and best kept records in NRS. Since its establishment, the Hastings Reservation has operated as a wing of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) at UC Berkeley. Many historical materials from the reserve are now held either at the MVZ or the Bancroft Library, but other important collections remain on site. Of particular note, are reserve's biological specimens and vegetation data, as well as one of the largest and longest running collections of administrative and management records held at any UC reserve.
